Born and raised in Chicago, Ian had a common Asian American upbringing by taking violin and piano lessons when he was young. Throughout his childhood and teenage years, he also became involved in choirs and musical theatre.
While attending Marquette University, a cappella groups didn’t yet exist on campus. In fact, Ian’s interest in contemporary and college a cappella had only developed a few years ago. Ever since, he’s traveled the country to watch other collegiate groups perform and compete, but singing with The Uptones for over five years has been his favorite experience.
Almost every summer, you’ll find him in Montréal walking down Saint Catherine Street finding a cheap bowl of authentic poutine while hoping to run into Céline Dion.
